With all trailer wheels still firmly blocked, landing gear still resting on firm ground and supporting trailer weight, and truck stationary and in park with emergency brake on: visually check that bottom of pin box is resting on top of the hitch. This could result in king pin coming to rest on top of skid plate instead of within hitch opening where jaws are located. King pin could slide off hitch and trailer could drop, resulting in death or serious injury see Figure 9.

Make sure truck is in park with emergency brake on. Place blocks firmly against front and rear of each trailer wheel to prevent any possible forward or rearward motion.

Using trailer jacks, lower trailer landing gear following the directions in the Trailer Manual until feet of landing gear are resting on firm ground. Cequent Performance Products, Inc. See Figure Page 13 5. Kinda has a flat steel plate and is all welded. The jaws look like they are cast but none of the rest is.

Looks like this one. No that's not the one. Hopefully this blog will help other people who may have the same problem. CBTraveler Member. I had a problem with my Reese 16k slider assembly. Reese readily replaced it. I was very happy with their support.

CBTraveler What was your problem which caused you to contact Reese? Joined Jun 6, Posts 2, If you can't use the lube plate and hate the mess of chassis grease on the 5th wheel, try black oil. It comes in a spray can and is primarily intended for open gears, chains and such on industrial and farm machinery. I use it on semi truck 5th wheels. Still a bit messy but not nearly as bad as chassis grease. Learned this from old timers years ago, I'm getting to be the old timer now.

I've also used it to rustproof inaccessible areas of stuff. It clings and creeps when sprayed, then it thickens up to a sticky, tacky film. Spray some on the plate when you grease the pivots or when it starts to dry up. Sorry for the delay in responding to Rene T; the problem was that the metal pegs, or pins, that locked the hitch into the slider tracks were deformed and would not release the slide when I attempted to move it back during a tight site back-in.

I heard from an RV tech that this problem did come up from time to time. I think I might have caused it by not unloading the slider while moving it back as the manual suggested, but I'm not sure, and I know they responded rapidly so maybe they had the problem and it wasn't my technique. Thanks CBTraveler for the response. I'll have to keep an eye on mine.

How long ago did you find this? What I've found so far with mine, is that I have a 6. You must log in or register to reply here. Latest posts. General Tech. And the easiest way to access these experiences is by reading the Amazon product reviews. However, you grasp incredible insights from these reviews, and you can reasonably start to cultivate whether or not each model is a high-quality product. It will go over things like what a 5th wheel is, the different types, how they work, the difficulty of installation and why you might need one.

All of this is an effort to ensure you get a 5th wheel hitch possible for your particular set of circumstances. And obviously, this is a pretty big factor to consider given you should make sure you actually need to shell out the excessive amount of money a high-quality one will cost.

So without further ado, a 5th wheel hitch is designed to carry much heavier loads than a regular ball hitch such as a 5th wheel trailer. See, the attachment point is in the bed of the truck rather than the rear bumper. This placement allows the truck to carry a more massive load like the before mentioned 5th wheel trailer. These 5th wheel hitches have one job, ensuring both your truck and your trailer arrive at their destination safely.

All in all, a 5th wheel hitch will cost you a massive amount of money for being able to give a stress-free experience of towing your trailer. And honestly, the peace of mind it provides is worth every penny! The 5th wheel hitch is placed in the bed of your truck rather than your bumper or rear frame.

This placement makes the added weight press down between the cab and the rear axle instead of the rear bumper as with ball-hitches. These devices instead rely on something called a kingpin a downward-facing pin and a plate that rests on top the fifth wheel hitch plate to connect onto your trailer.

The flat plate of your trailer and the flat plate of the 5th wheel hitch are continuously touching. All this sounds kind overwhelming right? As with most products these days, there are numerous types available for customers to purchase.

In this particular marketplace, there are several popular types. The six main ones are as follows: 2-way pivot head, 4-way pivot head, gooseneck hitch, sliding hitch, single jaw, and double jaw. A 2-way pivot head 5th wheel hitch will offer you two ranges of movement, forward and back. The lack of sway gives the hitch a concerning amount of resistance in these type of areas.

However, if your trip mainly consists of paved highways, these hitches can represent a bargain for you. Unlike the 2-way Pivot Head, the 4-way pivot head 5th wheel hitch does account for swaying back and forth with having four ranges of movement: forward, aft, and side to side. Honestly, these hitches might be my favorite types mentioned in this article.

These hitches have a unique ability to deal with all the rocking and swaying as the four ranges of movement give them total flexibility. After all, you never know when you might need to take a detour because of a traffic jam or construction. Instead, you could feel comfortable knowing the flexibility of your hitch will easily deal with the bumping, broken down roads.

The gooseneck hitch is ideal for trailers that hang over the back of your truck bed. See, these type of rigs will need more support to handle the extra pin weight, which is where the gooseneck 5th wheel hitch comes into save the day. In fact, gooseneck hitches are built specifically for these type of trailers and will make sure you the right amount of pivot.

All in all, a gooseneck hitch is the best 5th wheel hitch for gooseneck trailers. For instance, a 4-way pivot head or a sliding hitch could be the best available. However, there are some instances where a gooseneck hitch could be useful on a non-gooseneck trailer as they tend to have a higher load rating. Most sliding hitches require manual sliding, which can be a real hassle.

These manual models mean that you have to get out, adjust your trailer, lock it into place, driver around the sharp turn and then reset it. Sounds awful, right? However, there are a lot more expensive than the manual models I described previously. The double jaw 5th wheel trailer hitch uses two jaws to close around the kingpin. These hitches tend to be much more secure and snug than a sliding option. And these products also have a bonus of reducing the amount of noise created by the kingpin. It also lessens the movement of the trailer behind your truck; therefore, creating a much safer environment for you the driver.

However, the double jaw hitch does have one negative about it that must be noted. Due to using two jaws instead of one, it means that each jaw is less stronger than both them combined, which can be problematic in certain situations.

These hitches are designed to be stronger than your typical hitch and can handle the excess weight much better. It also has the advantage of you not having to worry about it breaking down in transit like you would with a double jaw. In other words, the single jaw is a more secure option than its double jawed counterpart. See, with a single jaw 5th hitch, the jaw wraps around the kingpin, which provides the maximum amount of jaw to pin contact.

This vast amount of contact will reduce the noise and clunking by the hitch. It will make you feel secure and reduce the chances you get a migraine because it lessens the noise created by the hitch itself. In other words, try to find a hitch that can be installed rather seamlessly without a lot of outside help.

You can also determine whether or not the hitch is easy to install by ensuring you have all the necessary accessories and parts for the install. Likewise, you should also make sure the hitch is easy and convenient for you to use. Therefore, the hitch itself should be able to connect and reconnect in conjunction with the specific requirements you have outlined. Instead, spend a little more money and get an automatic one or some other option, which will save a vast amount of frustration.

And you need a product that can safely do this job without causing you too much hassle. Enter the 5th wheel hitch. With the right 5th wheel hitch, you should have no problem getting your heavy trailer from one place to another. Any good FAQ section will do one thing: answer all your remaining questions about the topic at hand. Andersen Hitches has been in the hitch manufacturing market for over fifty years. And the reason for this longevity centers around their ability to provide high-quality products. I just thought it was essential we recognize these three specifically because each one comes up multiple times on our recommended products list.

It will depend on the model and the manufacturer you buy the 5th wheel hitch from and the features that it comes with; however, most 5th wheel hitches are removable with only the mounting brackets and bars left in place.

The rails will generally be left in place as will the previously mentioned brackets. The piece that can be removed is the hitch itself. If you do, it will just ruin whatever plans you have going on during your trip. From this, we can gather that having the right kind of rails is a significant part of this whole process. But it also makes us wonder whether or not all rails are the same and if we were using the right ones? Well, it will depend on the model of rails you use, but typically, most 5th wheel rails are made to the same industry standard dimensions.

These rails will generally be called universal 5th wheel rails, so you can quickly determine, which rails are adaptable to a multitude of manufacturers. Due to this, you must refrain from installing the rails without the hitch so you can avoid what would be a significant error.

From sliding 5th wheel hitches to 4-way pivot head 5th wheel hitches, there is a myriad of options available for you to sift through. But there are two things they all have in common; their purpose and excessive price tag.

The price is usually depended on one thing; the weight capacity the hitch itself can handle. For instance, the cheapest option in our product review section also has the least amount of weight handling capabilities.

I mean, an example of this would be a manual sliding hitch will cost significantly less than an automatic one because of the level of convenience the automatic one offers the customer. Honestly, any 5th wheel hitch you end up getting is going to cost you a nice chunk of change.

So please, spend whatever you need to ensure your new 5th wheel hitch offers a peak amount of stability and safety. Before installing a 5th wheel hitch, you must make sure your towing vehicle can handle the extra weight.

The installation instructions that come with your purchase of a 5th wheel hitch will provide you with the precise location for peak towing capabilities. This rail kit is connected to the brackets that are attached to your towing vehicle. Another point you should consider is that the rails should never be installed over a plastic bed liner. This wearing down will result in a loose hitch, which can cause all sorts of different issues.

If you have any reservations about installing a 5th wheel hitch yourself, you could always call a professional. Attaching a 5th wheel hitch sounds like an easy and straightforward process.
